4DRL Report Series 7 - Two Sides of the Same Coin: Digitizing the Allard Pierson’s Roman coin collection using cross-polarisation photogrammetry and RTI

For an assignment by Marleen Termeer, Assistant Professor, Radboud University Nijmegen, 10 coins in the collection of the Allard Pierson were recorded and visualised using two different imaging techniques: photogrammetry and RTI (Reflectance Transformation Imaging). The scanning and visualisation of these coins is a valorisation element for the NWO VENI project "Coining Roman rule? The emergence of coinage as money in the Roman world". The project aims to answer various questions related to the early adoption of coinage in the ancient world, specifically its social and political significance. For a presentation about the project results, a small exhibit is made that will highlight some of the coins in the Allard Pierson's collection This is part of the museum's Cross Culture Timeline (CCT), a digital application that places artifacts in a geographical, cultural and historical context. The digital visualisation techniques are meant to allow the museum visitor to closer inspect and interact with these small items in alternative ways to the common cabinet display with text signs.
