Dataset & Syntax of the TEAMS study

This dataset and accompanying syntax originate from the TEAMS study, a randomized controlled trial designed to investigate the optimum training variables in a resistance exercise training and protein intervention for frail older adults to improve muscle strength, mass and physical functioning; a randomized controlled trial.

Objective I of the study was to determine the optimal training intensity for improving muscle-related outcomes. Objective II was to examine the additional effects of a protein intervention during resistance training with varying training intensities on muscle outcomes. Both objectives were investigated using the attached dataset, provided in .sav and .csv formats. The accompanying SPSS syntax can be executed on the .sav file after updating the file path to match the local data storage location.

As a first step for both objectives, participants randomized to the 20% training intensity group (randomisation group = 1) were excluded, as these individuals were unable to train to muscle failure within the prescribed 10-minute timeframe per exercise. This is done by a filter. Further details on the progressive resistance training protocol can be found in the study protocol.

To address objective I, the syntax includes the procedures for running Linear Mixed Models (LMM). Prior to assessing time effects, the dataset must be converted from a broad to a long data structure. The syntax includes the code required for this data restructuring, followed by the LMM syntax to analyze time effects.

The code for objective II begins at row 354 and can be executed directly on the original broad structure .sav dataset.

Access to the dataset can be requested from the corresponding author (e.j.m.biersteker@hva.nl) with a valid justification.
